1) Estimates aren't apples to apples
Even if the price is close, the process can be totally different. Prep, materials, protection, and detail work change the result. Two companies can charge the same and still deliver completely different finishes.
2) I can't judge purely on price
Cheapest usually means corners. And even two "fair" prices can still deliver very different quality. This is where most costly mistakes happen for homeowners.
3) I'm hiring a process, not a promise
I want someone who can clearly explain:
- How they prep
- Who's doing the work
- What they protect
- How they prevent "surprises"
If they can't explain it simply, that's a red flag.
4) Specialization matters
Cabinets ≠ interior walls. I'm looking for people who do this type of job often, not "everything sometimes." Strong teams have painters assigned to specific tasks who repeat the same type of work daily.
5) Reviews help, but they're not the whole truth
I'm checking for consistency and patterns, not one perfect rating. Every job has risk — I'm just trying to lower it.
6) More estimates can just add confusion
If one company is clear, organized, and confident in their system, chasing 5–7 quotes usually doesn't help me decide better.
Bottom line: I'm choosing the team with the best process and the clearest standards — not just the lowest number.
